Kilkhampton

Situated on the long watershed of North Devon and Cornwall, the village was an important “Street Town” in ancient times. It has history going back to the Neolithic and has the remains of a Norman Castle. The village has not suffered over development and has many Burgess Plots fringing the village. Kilkhampton is situated at the head of a wooded valley that extends to Duckpool where this is evidence of a Romano-British site -unfortunately, not much to be seen today. Nestling on a spur of woodland within the valley is hidden a small Iron Age encampment, well worth a visit if only for its tranquillity. The walks throughout the valley should not be missed. At the end of the valley is an Old Mill and the cottage, once the home of Robert Stephen Hawker; Morwenstow’s Priest, Poet and saviour of souls. The inquisitive walker should choose Content and select Romano-British, Iron Age and Robert Stephen Hawker for more details.
