Read the background history content to add interest to the walks. The region has a very rich history of characterful figures; our archaeology is second to none and the geology along our coastline is unsurpassed. Bude and the River Neet was the start of the divide between Saxon England and Celtic Cornwall. King Alfred held lands at Kilkhampton and Stratton. The famous family of the Grenvilles built one of the “Great Houses of Cornwall” at Stowe. Tintagel was connected to major sea trade routes throughout Britain, Atlantic facing Europe and the Mediterranean. Launceston may have been home of the Kings of Dumnonia; Bodmin Moor has some of the best preserved Neolithic and Bronze Age history to be found in Britain. Our region has numerous small hamlets and villages, having a fascinating histories and, was the main gateways to Cornwall. Above all, this is an exceptionally unspoilt open countryside. There is much to explore.
