Tintagel

So well known as the birthplace of King Arthur. This underplays its importance as an historical site and the role that it has played in our early Cornish history as trading region. Home to the Kings of Dumnonia. The legend of Arthur almost certainly inspired Richard, Earl of Cornwall, to build his cliff-top castle here. Recent excavations have added enormously to our knowledge of this unique location. Now has a very modern and inspiring access bridge over the chasm between the mainland and the Island. It is a “must” visit.

The promontory itself became the centre of trade between Cornwall and the Mediterranean peoples, being on the Atlantic Trading Façade.

It was almost certainly the home of the Kings of Dumnonia in prehistory and in to the Saxon period. One of the last kings who may have held a summer court here was King Geraint.
